Support – Loopmaat

Kilometers of mijlen?

Support – Paceling

Paceling is your personal running coach for iPhone and Apple Watch. It builds a plan for your goal, controls your treadmill and keeps you on pace with taps on your wrist. In Dutch the app is called Loopmaat.

Need help or have an idea?
Email tnext@live.nl. Tell us which iPhone, Apple Watch and (for treadmill questions) which make and model of treadmill you use, and what happened; a screenshot helps. You'll usually hear back within a few days.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get started?

After opening the app, fill in your details. If they're in Apple Health, give the app access: your birth year, weight, height and heart rate are then filled in and kept up to date for you. Then set your VO2max with a test (a ramp test on the treadmill, or the Cooper test outdoors), with an estimate from your earlier runs, or with a value you already know.

Finally, say in your own words what you want to achieve, for example "10K in under 50 minutes in March". The app checks whether that's realistic and puts your plan in Plan. Choose which days you run in Profile → Settings → Plan and reminders.

How do I connect my treadmill?

Paceling works with treadmills that support Bluetooth FTMS (Fitness Machine Service). To connect:

  • Turn the treadmill on, and Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  • Open a workout and under Where are you running? choose Indoor. The app then looks for treadmills nearby.
  • Tap your treadmill in the list, or tap Start workout straight away. If Connect automatically is on and there's exactly one treadmill nearby, the app connects by itself and starts the workout as soon as the treadmill is ready.

Once connected, you see whether the treadmill is Controllable or Measuring only, and whether the app can set speed and incline. With Measuring only, the treadmill sends its data but you set speed and incline yourself. If the connection drops during a workout, the app reconnects by itself. Turn Connect automatically on or off in Profile → Settings → Treadmill.

Treadmill not found? Check that Paceling may use Bluetooth (Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth) and close the manufacturer's app: many treadmills only connect to one app at a time. If it still doesn't work, you can choose Start without treadmill control; distance and pace then come from your watch or iPhone. Connected, but something goes wrong? Open Connection log, tap Share log and attach it to your email.

Can I try the app without a treadmill?

Yes, with the demo treadmill. Open a workout, choose Indoor and turn on Use demo treadmill. The demo acts like an FTMS treadmill, with speed, incline and heart rate. That way you can see the dashboard, the control for each block and the report afterwards, even from your chair.

A workout with the demo is saved like a normal workout. Don't want to keep it? Delete it in the Log (and in Health, if it's there).

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No, but it makes the app a lot better. With your watch you get your heart rate and heart rate zones, taps on your wrist to keep you on pace, heart rate recovery and speed by heart rate on the treadmill. Without a watch your iPhone measures by itself with GPS and steps, without heart rate. If your treadmill passes on the heart rate from a chest strap, the app uses that.

My Apple Watch doesn't start along
  • Install Paceling on your watch: open the Watch app on your iPhone and install it under Available apps.
  • Allow Health access (see below); without it the watch doesn't measure your heart rate.
  • Watch not responding? Open Paceling on your watch and it will join the workout.

You can also run with just your watch. Your next workout from the plan is on your watch: choose Outdoor or Treadmill. Single workouts are under Free run. Your run then shows up in your log on your iPhone. Only your iPhone controls the treadmill.

Why does the app ask for access to Apple Health?

The app reads your heart rate, resting heart rate, VO2max, date of birth, sex, weight and height for your profile, zones and paces; your heart rate variability and sleep for the recovery advice; and your earlier running workouts when you import them. The app writes your runs to Health, so they also show up in the Fitness app.

You choose what the app may do, and can change it at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Paceling. Data that comes from Health, such as your weight, is changed in Health. Earlier runs, including those from other apps, can be brought in from the Log with the import button. Exactly what the app reads and writes is in the privacy policy.

Does the AI coach work on my iPhone?

The coach uses Apple Intelligence, on your iPhone itself. It needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings. After you turn it on, your iPhone first downloads the language model; that can take a while. You can see where things stand in Profile → Settings → Coach.

The app also works without Apple Intelligence. Your plan, the explanation for each workout, the report after your run and the weekly summary then come from fixed training rules, based on your VO2max and heart rate. Only Ask the coach needs Apple Intelligence.

Kilometres or miles? And which language?

The app follows your iPhone's measurement system: Settings → General → Language & Region → Measurement System. With Metric you see kilometres and km/h, with US or UK miles and mph. Your runs are always stored in metric, so you can switch at any time.

The language follows your iPhone: English or Dutch (in Dutch the app is called Loopmaat). Want a different language from your iPhone? Choose it in Settings → Apps → Paceling → Language. The coach answers in the same language and unit as the app.

My data isn't on my new iPhone

Paceling keeps your profile, plan and log in your own iCloud. Sign in with the same Apple Account and check that iCloud is on (Settings → [your name] → iCloud). In Profile → Settings → Data you see when it last synced, and you can tap Sync now.

Without iCloud the app works as usual, but your data is only on this iPhone. Preferences such as reminders and voice coaching are set per iPhone.

How do I get a reminder?

In Profile → Settings → Plan and reminders, turn on Reminder on training days and pick a time. That's also where you turn the Weekly summary on Sunday evening on or off. Nothing arriving? Check that notifications are on in Settings → Notifications → Paceling.

What can I ask Siri?

Say for example "Start my workout in Paceling", "What's my workout today in Paceling", "How was my last run in Paceling", "Pause Paceling", "Skip block in Paceling" or "Ask the coach in Paceling". You also find all actions in the Shortcuts app.

How do I delete my data?
  • One workout: in the Log, swipe it to the left and tap Delete. It disappears from all your devices; it stays in Health.
  • Everything: Profile → Settings → Data → Erase everything and start over erases your profile, plan and log on this iPhone and in iCloud.
  • In Health: runs already in Health can be deleted in the Health app.
